Accelerating Water Circularity in Food and Beverage Industrial Areas around Europe
In General
AccelWater’s main objective is to optimize freshwater water consumption in the food and beverage industry under a water-waste-energy nexus by introducing beyond state-of-the-art water reclaiming, reusing and Artificial Intelligence enabled monitoring and control technologies that will permit the use of reclaimed water in the manufacturing processes of food and beverages. On the same time, it will allow waste and energy reclamation, optimization and management, and consequently will result to environmental sustainability, cost savings and the development of added value products and value chains through material recovery.
More Information
AccelWater project’s framework will consist of 4 main pillars (Water, Waste, Energy, and Artificial Intelligence enabled Smart Monitoring and Control), and will focus on sectors of the food and beverage industry that have high water use and produce widely used products. AccelWater will work on brewery, dairy, tomato, pig meat processing, and fish industries across Europe. These industries represent some of the most active sectors of the food and beverage industry while being some of the biggest consumers of freshwater in industrial areas. Specifically, there are more than 10,000 breweries across Europe that produce more than 406 million HL of various beers annually, while more than 46 billion metric tonnes of fresh dairy products were consumed in EU in 2015. Accordingly, the tomato processing sector has more than 200 processing entities in EU that process annually 9.5 million tons of fresh tomatoes; the EU pig meat sector produces almost 23 million tons annually, while the EU fish sector produces more than 6 million tons of fish annually and thus being the 5th largest producer globally. Finally, there are more than 50,000 companies processing meat and fish across EU.
