Development of an energy-efficient precision irrigation system under deficit conditions using rainwater

In General
Main aim of ReDIrri is to create an integrated, energy-independent and affordable automated drip irrigation system, which uses harvested rainwater for covering the crop water needs in a deficit situation by offering a short-term irrigation program with a 5 day plan. The proposed system will offer a new solution for irrigation, harvesting, storing and recovering rainwater, utilizing natural flow (due to relief) and automating irrigation processes with the system to be energy autonomous. ReDIrri will record the amount of water available for irrigation and will use it in the most viable way by using crop irrigation on the basis of crop requirements.
More Information
Among the objectives of the project are the application of deficit irrigation, the automation of irrigation, the proper management of water reserves, the saving of water quantities, the reduction of irrigation costs of up to 40%, the security of crop production, the sustainable use of crop land and the dissemination of results. The system will operate autonomously using solar energy through individual solar panels. Through the web platform www.ardeusi.gr, the users can be informed if it is recommended or not to irrigate and the quantity of water that is required. The main objective of ReDIrri is to exploit alternative sources for irrigation and in particular to collect rainwater, by automating the process in a deficit situation. ReDIrri aims to develop an integrated trading system to optimize irrigation and protect water resources, as well as to develop a business model for wider dissemination of the system in the Greek and international markets.
AGENSO Contribution
AGENSO is implementing the entire project and the pilot areas are provided by DELAROS. AGENSO will elicit the user requirements in order to develop the software and the hardware. After that the systems will be evaluated in pilot areas.

ReDIrri Main Achievements
Identification of user requirements which will contribute at the design and development of the ReDIrri system. At the same time a reference framework will be formed for the final evaluation of the project. For this reason AGENSO will approach different stakeholders (farmers, agronomists, cooperatives) by the existing network.
AGENSO will implement the plan for the development of the ReDIrri system. It will present the general methodology, the architecture and the components of the system. Additionally the existing platform www.ardeusi.gr will be upgraded in order to support water management from alternative sources and the automated deficit irrigation applications.
Several parts of the system will be tested like the accuracy of irrigation, the operation of the platform as well as the smooth operation of the automatons. Also the financial viability of the system will be assessed by the implementation of the cost cycle analysis tool (Life Cycle Costing – LCC). An in-depth market analysis will be conducted for the successful and long-term exploitation of the project.
On this task AGENSO will focus on the position of ReDIrri on the market landscape in order to find the market segment that the ReDIrri will target. Also for the widespread adoption of the system several business models will be evaluated. Finally the results of the project will be widely disseminated through social media, its website and other activities.
