ESPA 2014-2020
Grant agreement no. Τ1ΕΔΚ-00459
Integration of GNSS capabilities into field telemetry stations to offer high-quality navigation and precision farming services.
In General
The SymbIoT project aims to provide precision farming services, accessible to the average Greek farmer that are characterized by the very high precision in positioning agricultural machinery, vehicles and measuring instruments, a positioning precision that can even reach a level less than 10-centimeters. It will introduce advanced positioning capabilities, enabling the development of new applications in the field of precision farming that support, among others, spatial mapping, route planning and automatic navigation of unmanned vehicles in the field. It will also contribute to the improvement of the productivity and the decrease of the environmental impact.
More Information
Through SymbIoT project many of the major challenges in precision agriculture will be solved. It is based on a combination of complementary technologies and systems comprising of advanced GNSS positioning systems, the Internet of Things – IoT, communication protocols, unmanned vehicles, earth observation systems which will be integrated into a unified platform. More specifically there will be an augmentation of a network of telemetry agro-climate stations, called GAIAtrons, which can also function as GNSS base stations, supporting real-time communication with rovers. These stations will be combined with precision farming services that will solve key challenges in the field offering spatial mapping, auto-navigation and route planning capabilities. In order to achieve accuracy, SymbIoT will develop an affordable and easy to use precision farming service for precision positioning of agricultural machinery with accuracy level to be less than 10 cm. To combine all these services and systems SymbIoT will be based on IoT (Internet of Things) technologies, a combination of complementary technologies and systems comprising of advanced GNSS positioning systems, IoT communication protocols, unmanned vehicles, earth observation systems, unified into a market ready platform.
AGENSO Contribution
AGENSO is WP3 leader (“Field Application Development”). Main aim of the WP is the Implementation of Android applications that will act as a guidance system for unmanned vehicles and agricultural machinery. This system allows them to travel safely, efficiently and autonomously to perform complex tasks on different crops.

AGENSO Main Tasks
An android application will be developed and will act as light navigation system for agricultural vehicles by downloading data from the GNSS receiver. Through the application the driver will be guided around the field following parallel lines for reducing overlays. It will be compatible with the CAN-BUS (J1939) and ISOBUS (ISO 11783) protocols.
This application will focus on unmanned vehicles (air and ground). These vehicles will travel safely, autonomously and efficiently through the field performing complex tasks in various crops. The android application will plan the route of the vehicles and the location as well as navigation data and measurements from various sensors on the vehicles will be displayed in real time.
Location data from the GNSS receiver will be used for digitization of spatial data such as field boundaries, tree locations and sampling points. Additionally all the measurements from sensors mounted on agricultural machinery and unmanned vehicles will be synchronized with the geo-data of the GNSS receiver and will be used for further analysis.
