Decision support tool for olive grow management

In General

The OliveGROW project aims to develop a reliable and user-friendly Information System (IS) that will incorporate the principles of precision agriculture, utilizing modern technological tools to improve the quality and quantity of olive crops. Also, the IS will adapt to the changing needs of olive groves, taking into account factors that affect fruit and olive oil production. Finally, a specialized precision irrigation model for the olive tree will be developed.

More Information

The proposed OliveGROW online platform is going to draw and utilize data of agricultural interest, from multiple sources and for multiple purposes, with the main objective of developing an interactive and continuously updated database, of great importance to the olive grower. More specifically, soil characteristics of olive crops will be studied, through on-site measurements using a soil and electrical conductivity sensor, carried by an agricultural tractor to create homogeneous management zones. Afterwards, aerial flights will be carried out with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (drones) to capture images from multispectral and RGB cameras.

The resulting data will be used to assess the robustness of the crop in its critical stages (e.g. flowering, fruit set). This assessment will contribute to the determination of the nutritional requirements of the crop, as well as the early identification of possible needs and risks, which may be due to nutrient deficiencies and stresses, as well as diseases and enemies, or incorrect irrigation planning.Additionally, a precision irrigation model will be developed exclusively for olive cultivation, with the aim of both optimizing irrigation efficiency and maximizing quality biomass. The resulting model will aim to plan irrigation both at the field level and at the level of multiple management zones in the wider area of Crete. At the end of each growing season during harvest, plot level production will be mapped using simple methods and the use of a positioning system (GPS) for further analysis and evaluation.

AGENSO Contribution

In the OliveGROW project, AGENSO is contributing to Work Package 2, titled "Creation and Implementation of a Multifactorial Management System to Maximize Olive Oil Production Quantity and Quality." Their role includes developing a pilot model for precision deficit irrigation tailored to olive cultivation. Following this, AGENSO's expert scientific team will compile a report on how irrigation practices impact olive yield, analyzing results by developmental stage and in close alignment with the crop’s specific needs. The AGENSO team will also develop the Information System and take part in the project's dissemination and communication efforts to foster broad acceptance among diverse stakeholders.
