Grant agreement no. 101161349
Mediterranean network for sustainable and circular water management in the agrifood sector

In General

The AquaLoops4Med project aims to improve water management across the Mediterranean, focusing on the agrifood sector. It will create an interregional network to demonstrate, scale, and commercialize sustainable, circular solutions for efficient water use, reducing water loss, optimizing processes, and promoting wastewater treatment and reclamation. The project will strengthen innovation ecosystems in four regions: Catalonia (ES), Basilicata (IT), Attica (GR), and Thessaly (GR), with a focus on supporting local SMEs and fostering knowledge transfer. The project will involve SMEs in testing innovative technologies and provide cascade funding to assist them in addressing water management challenges. Additionally, the consortium will offer support and services to SMEs, promoting further collaboration and knowledge exchange across the regions.

More Information

AquaLoops4Med seeks to showcase innovative, sustainable, and circular solutions for effective water management. The project adopts a circular economy approach, treating and revalorizing wastewater, vegetable waste, and animal waste to produce high-quality reclaimed water, biogas, biostimulants, and biopesticides. The project focuses on optimizing water management in the agrifood sector, with demonstration activities aimed at closing the loop in livestock farms. These activities include:

  1. rainwater harvesting
  2. onsite wastewater treatment and reclamation
  3. the use of reclaimed water for fertigation in nearby agricultural fields, all managed by a novel, digital, and efficient irrigation system.

The project's implementation will involve interregional investments targeting the demonstration, scaling-up, and commercialization of innovative, sustainable, and circular solutions aimed at enhancing water management in the Mediterranean region. These solutions encompass technologies and services for optimizing water management, reducing water losses, and improving processes. Additionally, the project emphasizes the utilization of alternative water sources, alongside appropriate wastewater treatment and reclamation practices, to address the growing demand for non-potable water within a circular economy framework.

AGENSO Contribution

AGENSO is responsible for the demonstration activities of the project, as the company specializes in technology for reclaimed water application in agriculture.
